It’s November 1, just 61 days until 2015 is history. It hardly seems possible that we are staring another Thanksgiving in the face, but in just couple of weeks we will be sitting down to a traditional favorite, Thanksgiving dinner.
I love Thanksgiving and I believe that as Christians this is something that should be more than a holiday with a turkey dinner and pumpkin pie. Thanksgiving, being thankful, should be a character trait that is at the top of our list. Thankfulness must be a way of life for us. Being thankful is more than politeness, it is a cornerstone that secures us, who we are, how we respond, what people see in us. Being thankful is more than politeness, it is a cornerstone that secures us, who we are, how we respond, what people see in us. There is hardly anything more distasteful than an ungrateful Christian. When we are not thankful, people notice and the question arises, “I thought they were supposed to be Christians!”
We need to be thankful. First, because of what Christ has done for us. He has given us eternal life. Secondly, He came to give us life more abundantly. Third, he will never leave us, abandon us, or let us down. He loves us and will always care for us. For these we need to be thankful.
Paul teaches us in Philippians 4:6 that as we pray, we are to be thankful. The Bible is full of admonishment for the believer to be thankful. The idea of Thanksgiving, thankfulness and gratitude, is spoken about over 150 times in the Scriptures.
So…as Thanksgiving approaches let us be reminded Thanksgiving is about more than turkey. However, we can enjoy a wonderful meal with family and friends — Just be Thankful!
